Storytelling: How to Create Narrative with a Costumed Model

  • CREATE Center for the Arts 73446 California 111 Palm Desert, CA, 92260 United States (map)

Artist Instructor Joanne Beaule Ruggles, Art Professor Emeritus, Cal Poly SLO

Monday Jan 29 – Friday Feb 2, from 9 AM – 4 PM daily (with 1 hour lunch break)

Work with a master figure artist Joanne Beaule Ruggles and costumed models as you discover how to capture and maximize story possibilities within your figure artworks. Our group will spend time identifying universal narrative topics, and discussing how metaphors can aid in your storytelling. After preliminary sketch-studying each pose from different points of view, you will plan your daily composition. The use of cameras to document both model and other pictorial information you may wish to utilize will be discussed. Finally we will begin drawings or paintings of your selected theme. On our last day we will continue development of your most successful narratives with helpful critique. Your artworks may not reach completion during the workshop. Our emphasis will be on getting you launched in the ability to tell stories, expanding your knowledge of beneficial tools, and successful work processes as you return to your own studio.

(It is suggested that enrollees have priorexperience working from the human figureas their subject.)
