ABOUT CREATE Center for the Arts Palm Desert

OUR MISSION: To CREATE community enrichment through the arts.

CREATE Center for the Arts was born in recognition of the need for creative space, tools and equipment to nourish, unite, inspire and empower our creative community through a wide variety of artistic platforms. CREATE Center is a supportive, collaborative, inspiring, accessible venue for artists and art lovers of all ages and abilities to learn and grow.

All creations begin with an idea. Having been in service to the local creative community for thirty years, founder Debra Ann Mumm recognized a need for a studio forward arts venue that provides space and equipment needed for artists to thrive. After giving some thought to moving her business Venus Studios to the San Pablo area to be part of the new city center, walking distance to College of the Desert and the El Paseo shopping district, the decision was made after stumbling into a 5400 square foot space on Highway 111 that was originally a spa showroom, and most recently past home of Southwest Community Church thrift store. The perfect spot to house gallery shows, conduct classes, demonstrations, concerts... endless possibilities for artists.

The first meeting was held in September of 2016 to share the vision and gather volunteers to make it a reality. CREATE Center for the Arts filed our Articles of Incorporation in October of 2016. We took on The Coachella Valley Art Scene as our fiscal sponsor in the spirit of local collaboration to benefit both organizations, giving us an opportunity to collect donations with 501c3 tax status. Our form 1023 application is complete, awaiting formal recognition by the IRS for 501c3 status as our own entity. CREATE Center for the Arts is the Coachella Valley's newest, hottest art non-profit start-up!

Our first community event was Street at Westfield Palm Desert on November 4, 2016. We had a small team that handed out postcards, raffled free art classes and signed people up for the CREATE Center for the Arts newsletter. It was a great night, we met many new supporters for the project while enjoying being a part of the artistic environment.

The next opportunity that was CREATED was a small image community art show and sale on December 6, 2016. CREATE Center for the Arts showcased demonstrating artists from local arts organizations including The Desert Weavers and Spinners, Desert Art Center, The Coachella Valley Watercolor Society and the Artists Council of Palm Springs Art Museum, as well acting as the hub for The Coachella Valley Art Scene's 111 Music Festival. We were able to introduce the public to our fantastic dream space located at 73446 Highway 111, activating it's diverse capacity with an amazing family friendly free art and music event, while raising funds to further our cause. We had hands on activities in weaving, acrylic and watercolor painting. Artist demonstrations by Diane Morgan, Pat Kodet, Kathleen Scoggin and Jessica Schiffman were appreciated by the many art lovers that attended. Venus Studios sponsored a printmaking station, and T-Shirts were screen printed live while you watched by Rick Rodriguez. It was a fantastic introduction to the venue, touching hundreds of lives with a variety of artistic opportunities, bringing the space to life with more than just imagined possibilities! Thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers for making it a reality, with the help of our local sponsors Luscious Lorraine's, The Real Italian Deli, Mitch's of El Paseo, LG Graphix, Cannon Creative and Venus Studios, we were able to CREATE an amazing, unique community event together.

In January CREATE Center participated in the Live Well Festival at Civic Center Park, offering mural painting, a resolution board and glass cutting to the festival participants. We had a great day getting creative with our community!

Fast forward to February 2017, after many meetings and donations, CREATE Center officially moved in to our space, starting off strong with a variety of weekly classes taught by well respected local instructors as well as the Venus Studios workshop series that brought internationally recognized artists and students from as far away as the UK. Everyone immediately fell in love with the light open venue that allowed them the freedom to dive in to their creativity. CREATE Center was instantly vibrant with art from the community, much of which was donated in an effort to help CREATE Center raise the necessary funds to sustain our amazing location. We gained support of local sponsors Shadow Mountain Resort and Club to bring an historical photo series never before available to CREATE Center for the Arts as a limited edition. CREATE Center also hosted free well attended lectures in natural Zapotec dyes by Porfirio Gutierrez sponsored by The Desert Weavers and Spinners, as well as free painting demonstrations in Powercolor by Caroline Jasper and Loosen Up techniques by Robert Burridge sponsored by Venus Studios. Generous donations provided the studio with an etching press and  craft storage station as well as a pledge for a screen printing equipment in honor of one of our founding board members Susan Smith Evans who was tragically killed in an accident.

April brought CREATE Center for the Arts to the Indian Wells Arts Festival where we engaged people with their creativity and shared our vision for the center. Our founder Debra Ann Mumm received the CHANGEMAKER award for her tireless work in the in the local art scene. We met many enthusiastic members of our creative community who were also inspired by our vision for a flexible art space. We welcomed Tools for Tomorrow for KIDS DAY at CREATE, a free and open to the public day for kids and families to play art studio! Participants made music and engaged in mask making, abstract art, mural painting, drawing, coloring and printmaking. The main gallery features a kids show with works by Tools for Tomorrow, Artisan Old Town Studio, Safehouse of the Desert AND the students of CREATE Center for the Arts! On display through the end of April.

In May, in addition to our ongoing classes, we continue with our theme of community in hosting the Congressional Art Competition for the office of Raul Ruiz! This district wide show gives high school students the opportunity to formally display their work in a public setting and provides recognition and scholarship opportunities for the winner of the competition. Following the Congressional show, CREATE is hosting CREATE COMMUNITY an open call show for artists of all ages! Later in May, CREATE Center is partnering with CDAC - California Desert Arts Council, to bring an Art Salon benefiting local artists and arts organizations. This is just the beginning of what we are able to accomplish. With financial support we will be able to grow the CREATE Center into an amazing resource for desert creatives.

Are we advocates for public arts? Absolutely. Creativity, in all its forms, matters. That’s why we’re passionate about the ability to educate, empower and inspire all levels of artists. Through multidisciplinary working studios and event spaces, CREATE Center for the Arts Palm Desert calls forth artists and makers in a vast array of disciplines while presenting cultural and creative programming, all while exhibiting to the public the works of local artists and arts groups.

This includes providing a home for other local arts nonprofit organizations to offer events and programs. We also have an alliance with The Coachella Valley Art Scene, a nonprofit, that enthusiastically collaborates to promote community based art. Help us keep the future of art where it belongs: in the hands of emerging creators, students and local artists.

In addition, we are helping to build a bridge in the Coachella Valley arts and education scene. Our contributions will include community outreach to local schools and organizations with the intention that, ultimately, we’ll be in a position to bring more art programming to our schools through field trips and events. We view this as another socially conscious contribution to the local area.
